Approximating the Real Structured Stability Radius with Frobenius-Norm Bounded Perturbations

چکیده
We propose a fast method to approximate the real stability radius of a linear dynamical system with output feedback, where the perturbations are restricted to be real valued and bounded with respect to the Frobenius norm. Our work builds on a number of scalable algorithms that have been proposed in recent years, ranging from methods that approximate the complex or real pseudospectral abscissa and radius of large sparse matrices (and generalizations of these methods for pseudospectra to spectral value sets) to algorithms for approximating the complex stability radius (the reciprocal of the H∞ norm). Although our algorithm is guaranteed to find only upper bounds to the real stability radius, it seems quite effective in practice. As far as we know, this is the first algorithm that addresses the Frobenius-norm version of this problem. Because the cost mainly consists of computing the eigenvalue with maximal real part for continuous-time systems (or modulus for discrete-time systems) of a sequence of matrices, our algorithm remains very efficient for large-scale systems provided that the system matrices are sparse.

Stability Radii for Innnite Dimensional Systems with Stochastic Uncertainty
We consider linear deterministic systems on real Hilbert spaces which are subjected to a nite number (N) of stochastic, structured, Lipschitzian perturbations. A stability radius is deened and is completely characterized via an N-parameter minimization of the norm of a family of bounded operators. This is in contrast to the determin-istic case where the stability radius is determined by the-fun...
متن کاملApproximating real stability radii
The stability radius of an n×n matrix A (or distance to instability) is a well-known measure of robustness of stability of the linear stable dynamical system ẋ = Ax. Such a distance is commonly measured either in the 2-norm or in the Frobenius norm. Even if the matrix A is real, the distance to instability is most often considered with respect to complex valued matrices (in such case the two no...
متن کاملH∞-Norm Computation for Large and Sparse Descriptor Systems
In this paper we discuss the problem of computing the H∞-norms of transfer functions associated to large-scale descriptor systems. We exploit the relationship between the H∞-norm and the structured complex stability radius of the corresponding system pencil. To compute the structured stability radius we consider so-called structured pseudospectra. Namely, we have to find the pseudospectrum that...

متن کاملOn Robust Stability with Structured Time-Invariant Perturbations
We consider the problem of robust stability for uncertain systems described in terms of multiple scalar structured time-invariant perturbations, which are norm bounded. The issue we address is the role that the type of perturbation norm plays in the robust stability conditions. To this end, the L p-induced norms (for 1 p 1) on the perturbations are considered, and some simple relations between ...
